Ḵay Christmas

Our third Kay Christmas event has already come and gone, but it was definitely one to remember!

About a week prior to Kay Christmas, we had a 20ft tree delivered. (Hawaa to the Skidegate Volunteer Fire Dept!) And thank goodness we have such a high ceiling in the Stlaay Daw Naay (Welcome House). Decorating it took few days, with help from the Haida Gwaii Higher Education Students, and friendly people who offered a hand when they came to visit HHC. Five hundred lights, over one hundred different ornaments, and lots of blood, sweat, and tears later, our tree was up and looking beautiful!

We had organized live music throughout the day, featuring Ron Souza, who played some uplifting rhythms on his guitar and sang us into the afternoon. The Ukeladies strummed adorable and funny Haida Gwaii versions of some well-known Christmas Carols, and the QC Choir, beautifully harmonized, sang Christmas classics that had everyone singing a long.

Classroom 1 was filled with crafts for kids, where they could make their own Christmas ornaments, reindeer antlers, and play games like the Snowman Toss! This filled the day with lots of little smiles.

Local vendors set up in the morning, lining the halls with beautifully handcrafted gifts and delicious treats. Did you know that for each dollar spent locally, there is a $3 benefit to the community? Haida Gwaii hosts a lot of craft and gift fairs during this time of year, and it’s a great opportunity to support local business, which supports local families! Now that’s Christmas shopping that gives back.

At 1pm, Santa arrived! Many kids (and a few adults) were lined up to take photos and tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas. He gave lots of gifts and smiles to everyone who sat on his lap.

Hawaa to all of our staff, the local vendors, musicians, and everyone who helped make this day a success. Merry Ḵay Christmas!
